Got six tabs open comparing the same thing?

ChatGPT can read them for you now.

On Thursday, OpenAI upgraded its ChatGPT extension for Chrome. OpenAI's line: "the full power of ChatGPT is now in your browser."

It does two things.

It reads the tabs you have open and answers questions about them.

And it can work inside them: fill in forms, send messages, download files and sort your tabs into groups.

It even works on sites you're already signed in to, like Gmail, LinkedIn and Salesforce.

(Which is great. And also the reason there's a setting you should leave off.)

Right after this: the setup, five jobs to hand it, and that one setting.

Now a quick word from today's sponsor.

Answering a question takes the right article. Doing the work (a refund, a plan change) takes permission. Running Agents in Customer Work, four weekly webinars. Register for All Four

Right. Back to it.

Two ways to use it

The Chat side opens in a sidebar next to the page you're on. Mention a tab, or highlight some text, and ask about it. It can also answer questions about a YouTube video, as long as the video has captions.

Engadget's example: you have a few couches open in different tabs. Ask ChatGPT to compare them, and it lines up size, price, delivery time and return policy for you.

The Work side is where ChatGPT takes the wheel. It fills in the form, writes the message and sends it, right inside your tabs.

It also runs in Edge, Brave, Opera and Vivaldi.

Setup

  1. Install the ChatGPT extension from the Chrome Web Store.

  2. For the Work side, open the ChatGPT desktop app and go to Settings → Computer Use. You'll know it's connected when your browser shows "Manage" there.

  3. Start a new Work chat and @-mention your browser.

Engadget says the extension is available on every plan. OpenAI adds that it can depend on the rollout and your workspace settings, so if you don't see it yet, that's the likely reason.

Five jobs to hand it

Copy any one of these:

1. Compare the products in my open tabs by price, delivery time and return policy. Put it in a table and tell me which one you'd pick.

2. Read the three supplier pages I have open and draft an email to the best fit, asking for a quote.

3. Fill in the form on this page using the details in my notes tab. Stop before you press submit.

4. Summarize this YouTube video and list the steps it recommends, with timestamps.

5. Group my open tabs by project.

Number 3 is the one to try first. Notice the last line. You'll want it in every form job.

The one setting to leave off

The first time ChatGPT wants to use a website, it asks you. You get four choices:

  • Allow once

  • Allow for this site

  • Allow for all sites

  • Decline

Leave "Allow for all sites" alone. It lets ChatGPT use any website without asking, and OpenAI itself labels it "Elevated Risk."

For the sites you use every day, pick "Allow for this site" instead.

Three things to know before you trust it

  1. It acts as you. On a site where you're signed in, ChatGPT can read and act through your account. Close your banking tabs in that window before you hand it a job.

  2. Web pages can contain bad instructions. OpenAI's own advice: "Treat page content as untrusted context, and review the website before allowing ChatGPT to continue."

  3. Check before anything gets sent. Ask it to stop before submitting, and read what it filled in. Your browser history is protected separately: ChatGPT has to ask every time it wants to look.

Make it stick

Pick the two or three sites you use every day, like your calendar, your inbox and your CRM.

Set those to "Allow for this site", and keep the list short. You can change it any time under Settings → Computer Use → Manage.

The trick with any AI helper is knowing which jobs to hand over, and which to keep. That's the whole idea behind The One-Person Company Playbook.

It's the complete setup for running a business where AI does the work of a full team. Inside:

  • A company folder with your brief, pipeline tracker and invoice log already laid out, so any AI picks up where you left off

  • Thirty AI roles across six departments, from sales to finance, ready to use

  • Six jobs that run on a clock: the morning briefing, follow-ups, invoice checks and more

  • The step-by-step path from picking a business model to your first paying customer

Works on Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini or Grok, whichever you already pay for.

The catch: it takes about eight hours over a weekend to set up. After that, it's yours. $97, one-time (down from $297).
