Pay for ChatGPT Plus, Pro or Business?

Starting in December, your limits work differently.

Right now, Chat, Work and Codex each have their own limits.

In December, OpenAI is folding them into one shared allowance across ChatGPT and Codex, measured in tokens.

(Tokens are the small chunks of text a model reads and writes. Longer, harder jobs use more of them.)

OpenAI hasn't said how big the new allowance will be on each plan.

It did say this: "We expect most users won't need to wait for their usage to reset more often than they do now."

My read: if you mostly chat, you'll barely notice. If you live in Codex, keep an eye on this one.

Right after this: what will count against your allowance, what won't, where to check it, and three habits to start before December.

Now a quick word from today's sponsor.

Keep in touch beyond the itinerary.

Travel beyond cell coverage with ZOLEO. Send an “I’m OK” check-in message and share your location. Save 20% on a regularly priced ZOLEO Satellite Communicator with code CONNECT20.

Not valid on sale-priced devices or with other discounts. Valid outside promotional sale periods.

Right. Back to it.

What changes

  • One allowance for ChatGPT and Codex, on Plus, Pro and Business.

  • Usage is counted in tokens.

  • Bigger models and complex tasks generally use more of it.

  • So a long Codex session leaves less for chat, and the other way around.

OpenAI hasn't named a start date beyond "December," and it hasn't said anything about Free or Go.

What won't count

Chats on Instant, ChatGPT's fast mode. In OpenAI's words: "Instant chat will not draw from your usage."

Where to check

Settings > Usage will show your combined remaining usage and when it resets.

If you run out, you can wait for the reset, upgrade, or buy credits for eligible features.

Chat and tasks in one place

OpenAI is bringing Work's agent features into the main ChatGPT experience, so asking a question and handing off a task happen in one place. Reports say the Chat and Work tabs in the desktop app will merge too.

(Claude already works this way: chat, Cowork and Claude Code all draw from the same limits.)

Three habits to start now

  1. Use Instant for quick stuff: lookups, rewrites, short questions. Save the heavier modes for jobs that need them.

  2. Start a fresh chat for each new task. A long chat carries everything before it, and more context usually means more tokens.

  3. In December, open Settings > Usage after your first big job. One look tells you more than any announcement.

A bonus for two-account people

On the ChatGPT iPhone and Android apps, you can now stay signed in to two accounts and switch without logging out.

Go to Settings > Switch account. Each account keeps its own chats, memory, settings and subscription.

Handy if you keep work and personal separate. It's still rolling out, so give it a few days if you don't see it.

Make it stick

Pick your three heaviest ChatGPT jobs this week and write them down.

When December lands, check what each one costs. Then you'll know if your plan still fits.

Limits sting most when every new chat starts from zero and you burn messages re-explaining your business. Write it down once, somewhere the AI can read it, and you skip that part every day. That's the whole idea behind The One-Person Company Playbook.

It's the complete setup for running a business where AI does the work of a full team. Inside:

  • A company folder with your brief, pipeline tracker and invoice log already laid out, so any AI picks up where you left off

  • Thirty AI roles across six departments, from sales to finance, ready to use

  • Six jobs that run on a clock: the morning briefing, follow-ups, invoice checks and more

  • The step-by-step path from picking a business model to your first paying customer

Works on Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini or Grok, whichever you already pay for.

The catch: it takes about eight hours over a weekend to set up. After that, it's yours. $97, one-time (down from $297).
