1. Google Search to Get Conversational AI Upgrade

Google is testing an AI Mode (AIM) for its Search app, blending conversational interactions with features like Google Lens analysis and Gemini Live’s AI capabilities. Users could ask follow-ups, interrupt responses, or search using voice and images for a more dynamic experience. AIM may pave the way for Google Search to integrate seamlessly with Gemini’s multimodal tools, shifting searches from results lists to direct, thoughtful answers.

2. OpenAI May Drop AGI Clause to Strengthen Ties with Microsoft

OpenAI is in talks to remove a clause that limits Microsoft’s access to its technology upon achieving artificial general intelligence (AGI). The provision, designed to prevent commercial misuse of AGI, could hinder Microsoft’s future investments. The proposed change aligns with OpenAI’s transition to a public benefit corporation to attract more funding for its $150 billion-valued operations. OpenAI aims to redefine AGI as a societal milestone rather than a single point, while retaining a non-profit entity to ensure its mission to benefit humanity remains intact.

3. OpenAI's Latest AI System Sparks AGI Debate

OpenAI’s latest AI model, o1, showcases advanced reasoning with techniques like Chain-of-Thought prompting, achieving breakthroughs such as an 83% success rate in math competitions. While o1 sparks AGI debates, experts say true AGI remains distant, posing both transformative potential and significant risks.

6. TSMC and Nvidia Discuss Production of AI Chips in Arizona Facility

aiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) is in talks with Nvidia to produce the Blackwell AI chips at TSMC’s new Arizona plant, set to begin production next year. Currently, Blackwell chips are produced in Taiwan but are in high demand for AI and accelerated computing tasks. While the Arizona facility will handle the front-end process, the chips will still need to be shipped to Taiwan for packaging due to the lack of CoWoS capacity in Arizona. The move could add another major client to the Arizona plant, which already serves Apple and AMD.
