Good morning! It is November 20, 2024, today. We have an exciting lineup of AI news, from Niantic's innovative use of Pokémon GO data to a major AI initiative by the US government and a significant leadership hire at Meta. Let's dive into the latest updates!

1. Niantic Uses Pokémon Go Scans to Train AI for Mapping the Physical World

Niantic, known for Pokémon Go, is creating an AI model using 10+ million player scans to map physical spaces. Dubbed a "large geospatial model," it processes geolocated images to enhance augmented reality (AR) tools like Lightship. The data, captured from pedestrian perspectives, aids applications in robotics, spatial planning, and AR collaboration. While covered in terms of service, some players express mixed reactions to their contributions fueling AI advancements.

2. U.S. Commission Advocates AI "Manhattan Project" to Counter China's AGI Progress

A U.S. congressional commission has proposed a large-scale public-private initiative to accelerate artificial general intelligence (AGI) development, paralleling China's rapid advancements. Inspired by the WWII Manhattan Project, the effort would address energy and infrastructure barriers, such as data center permitting. The commission's report also recommends trade policy reforms to counter China's economic strategies. While the proposal highlights AGI’s strategic importance, bipartisan cooperation remains uncertain amid election tensions.

3. Meta Hires Salesforce AI Exec to Lead New Business AI Group

Meta has appointed Clara Shih, Salesforce's former AI chief, to lead its newly established Business AI group. The team will develop AI tools leveraging Meta’s Llama models to support businesses on Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp, potentially including AI-generated ad tools. Meta’s move aligns with its focus on integrating AI across its platforms to boost ad efficiency and customer experiences. Shih’s transition follows Salesforce's recent intensified AI efforts amid investor concerns about missed opportunities in the AI market.

4. Microsoft Envisions AI “Agents” for Autonomous Business Tasks

At its Ignite conference, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella introduced plans for AI "agents" capable of automating complex tasks like reviewing customer returns or analyzing supply chains. These advancements aim to extend the functionality of tools like Copilot, addressing user demand for long-range planning and reasoning in AI. While Microsoft sees these agents as integral to the future of work, critics like Salesforce’s CEO have called the strategy into question, citing concerns over performance and data security.

5. AI Music Maker Suno V4 Unveiled Amid Ongoing Copyright Controversy

Suno, the AI music generator facing lawsuits from major record labels for using copyrighted material in training, has launched Suno V4. This tool targets content creators, game developers, and marketers with capabilities like creating background music, sound effects, and AI-generated vocals. The release follows recent hires, including Jack Brody as Chief Product Officer and Timbaland as a strategic advisor. Suno’s expansion challenges the music industry's synch licensing market while defending its use of copyrighted data under "fair use."
