Good morning, this is Monday, March 10, 2025. We have some exciting AI news today, including Microsoft's development of advanced AI models and Foxconn's introduction of 'FoxBrain'

1. Microsoft's New AI Models Challenge Industry Leaders

Microsoft is developing its own artificial intelligence reasoning models, aiming to rival those of OpenAI and Anthropic. The company has trained a family of models called MAI, which reportedly perform comparably to existing industry-leading models. Microsoft plans to integrate these models into its products, such as Microsoft 365 Copilot, and may release them as APIs for external developers by the end of the year. This move seeks to reduce Microsoft's reliance on external AI providers and lower associated costs.

2. Foxconn Unveils 'FoxBrain' AI Model

Taiwan's Foxconn has launched its first large language model, 'FoxBrain,' aimed at enhancing manufacturing and supply chain management. Trained using 120 of Nvidia's H100 GPUs over approximately four weeks, FoxBrain is based on Meta's Llama 3.1 architecture. It is optimized for traditional Chinese and Taiwanese language styles and approaches world-class performance, though it slightly lags behind China's DeepSeek model. FoxBrain's applications include data analysis, decision support, document collaboration, mathematics, reasoning, problem-solving, and code generation.

3. Cursor's $10 Billion Valuation Talks

In the booming AI coding sector, Anysphere, the creator of the AI coding assistant Cursor, is reportedly in discussions to raise funds at a staggering $10 billion valuation. This move reflects the growing investor interest in AI-powered coding tools, which are outpacing their use in other sectors. With current annualized recurring revenue climbing, Anysphere's rapid growth is evident and indicative of the sector's potential.

4. China's Universities Expand AI Programs

Several of China's top universities have announced plans to expand undergraduate enrollment to meet national strategic needs, particularly in artificial intelligence (AI) and related fields. This initiative follows the success of AI startup DeepSeek, highlighting China's progress in AI amidst U.S. restrictions on Chinese student visas. Institutions such as Peking University, Renmin University, and Shanghai Jiao Tong University are adding spots for new students, focusing on fields like information science, engineering, clinical medicine, integrated circuits, biomedicine, healthcare, and new energy.

A group of authors, including Ta-Nehisi Coates and Sarah Silverman, have alleged in a U.S. court filing that Meta used "pirated" books from the LibGen dataset to train their AI models, despite internal warnings about the legality. The authors claim that CEO Mark Zuckerberg approved the use of these copyright-protected materials, potentially compromising Meta's negotiations with regulators. This is part of ongoing legal battles regarding the use of copyrighted content for AI training, which creative professionals argue undermines their livelihoods.

6. DOJ Urges Google to Divest Chrome Amid Antitrust Actions

The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has proposed that Google sell off its Chrome browser to address antitrust violations, asserting that Google's dominance in search and search ads has been maintained through anticompetitive practices. This proposal follows a ruling affirming Google's illegal monopoly on search and search ads, given its deals with device makers and browser partners ensuring Google as the default search engine. The DOJ also seeks to prohibit Google from paying for preferential search engine treatment and mandates prior notification for collaborations with competitors.
