Good morning, this is Tuesday, February 18, 2025. We have some exciting AI news today, including Elon Musk's xAI releasing its latest chatbot, Grok 3, and The New York Times integrating AI tools into its newsroom.

1. Elon Musk’s xAI Releases Grok 3
Elon Musk's AI company, xAI, has launched its latest flagship model, Grok 3. This new AI model, designed to rival OpenAI’s GPT-4o and Google's Gemini, can analyze images and respond to questions, enhancing user interaction on Musk’s social network, X. Grok 3, developed using an expansive data center with around 200,000 GPUs, claims to surpass previous AI models with its advanced reasoning capabilities. The model aims to provide maximally truth-seeking AI responses, even in politically sensitive contexts. Grok 3 introduces innovative features accessible through the Grok app, promising significant advancements in mathematics, science, and programming inquiries.

2. The New York Times Embraces AI in the Newsroom
The New York Times has started integrating AI tools to assist its journalists, encouraging their use for editing, summarizing, and generating content ideas. Their new tool, Echo, helps summarize articles and company activities. While AI aids in various content creation tasks, the newspaper maintains that its journalism will continue to be primarily crafted and vetted by expert journalists, ensuring a balance between AI efficiency and human oversight.

3. AI ‘Brain Decoder’ Advances Thought Translation
Researchers have enhanced an AI-based brain decoder, allowing it to interpret a person’s thoughts into text with minimal training. This breakthrough could significantly aid individuals with aphasia by providing new communication methods. The decoder employs machine learning to translate brain responses to stories, overcoming previous limitations that required extensive training on individual users.

4. X Hikes Premium+ Plan Prices Following Grok 3 Launch
Following the release of Grok 3, Musk’s platform X has doubled its Premium+ subscription plan prices, which now offer exclusive features of the new AI model. The updated plan costs nearly $50 monthly, reflecting the value of advanced AI functionalities. However, pricing inconsistencies on X’s website have caused some confusion among users.

5. Older AI Models Show Cognitive Decline
A recent study has revealed that older AI models exhibit signs of cognitive decline, similar to aging in humans. Using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) test, researchers found that older models like Gemini 1.0 scored significantly lower than newer iterations, raising questions about the long-term reliability of aging AI in sensitive applications like medical diagnostics.
